WANTED: Starting gear for new fly fisher

Postby jamesvalcke on Tue Apr 14, 2009 1:33 pm

Just a quick note to see if there is anyone out there looking to offload their inexpensive and previously enjoyed equipment. I am a bass fisherman with mostly spinning and baitcasting equipment, but after a memorable outing last year fly fishing in New Brunswick I was keen to learn more. I live in the Hintonburg neighborhood and want something I can just drag down to the Ottawa river for the time being. Anyways, I'm looking to spend very little for a whole package; rod, reel, line and a few flys. Under $100. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks a bunch! Please email me with details jamesvalcke@hotmail.com

Inexpensive. This is a word fly fishers are not familiar with.

Welcome to the club. I'm die hard basser as well and keep an 8wt in the bassboat.

Keep an eye out in the classifieds on the Fish-Hawk board. Fly rods and reels pop up every once in a while.

I have some fly reels and fly line available. There are three reels with two of them never being used and all older. The fly lines are DT and never been used on the two new reels.

Le Baron has a couple cheap but pretty decent starter kits for around 100$. I bought one as a spared to teach a buddy and was impressed with it. just ask them for either the martin kit or the cortland kit, both come with the reel, line, rod and a couple flies. I bought the Martin and wish i had it when i was starting.

I can put together a rod, line and reel suitable for bass fishing in our area. The cost would be $ 120.
