It was brought to my attention that Lee Valley Tools is now carrying a small hand vise that may be on interest to anyone tying flies.

That's an interesting tool. Not sure what I'd need it for. Maybe to replace a vise for my tying kit to take in the truck?

I was at the huge international fishing expo here in Yokohama on the weekend. There was a booth hosted by a group that does traditional Japanese fly fishing. The style is long bamboo rods without reels and fishing is done like long distance Czech nymphing. One of the men tied a fly for me using a hand-held vise. The vise was a pair of heavy-duty tweezers jammed into the end of an 8-inch piece of bamboo and held in place with electrical tape. Very high tech.....for the 3rd century AD.

Brian,

Speaking of Japenese fly fishing you should check out the Tenkara USA website. They have some cool stuff! ;-)

Todd,

Thanks for the link - I didn't know tenkara existed in the USA. I've seen people fishing like this and I'm tinking about trying it myself....got the biz card of one of the guys from the booth so I might contact him for lessons.

Tenkara USA has some pretty neat videos on their site. I read about the technique some time ago but have never seen anyone use the technique. Looks like a lot of fun on small streams.
